But in the episode (and the video above), Aang never completes the process. He has difficulty in releasing his attachment to Katara and therefore cannot open the Avatar State. This scene confused many viewers—and many spiritual seekers, too. That seed of lack, attachment, and control kept his crown closed. But here’s the beauty: the story doesn’t end there.
